Edublox franchise information index:

Introduction

This is a first-class business opportunity for individuals who, in the education field, want to:

  • Run their own reading and learning clinic and earn a sustainable and worthwhile income.
  • Experience a profound sense of fulfilment by seeing children achieve who previously struggled with reading and learning.
  • Receive appreciation from grateful parents and teachers.
  • Be part of a national and professional educational service organisation with a first-class reputation.

Background and History

The first Edublox reading and learning clinic was established in February 2007 — the end-result of 30 years' experience in practice, and the combined effort of 50 years of intensive research about reading and learning. (For more details, visit the About Us page and Our History page.)

As an outcome of our research we have developed a number of programs that are currently exported to eight countries. However, the newest, latest and best programs, techniques and methods — including a scientific and comprehensive reading and learning assessment — are used exclusively at the Edublox clinics.

Because (1.) the assessment is effective in determining the cause(s) of the learner’s reading and learning difficulty, (2.) franchisees are trained to have a deep understanding of learning and learning disabilities, and (3.) they have access to our world-class programs, methods and techniques, they are able to effectively solve reading and learning problems and create a basis for lifelong learning.

Mission and Values

Our mission is to help learners to Read, Learn and Achieve by attending sustainable Edublox reading and learning clinics throughout South Africa.

We value:

  • Developing learners to achieve results — improvement in school performance and self-image, and creating a basis for lifelong learning.
  • Quality and compassionate customer service.
  • Providing challenging and fun learning experiences.
  • Using tried and tested educational practices based on established theories.
  • Working professionally through proper business practices and fit-for-purpose computerised systems.
  • Amiable and value adding relationships between franchisor and franchisees.

Market and Business Potential

The total primary school-going population in South Africa (Grade 1- 7) is more than 7 million. Conservatively speaking, at least 20% of primary school children in South Africa have serious reading and learning problems and at least 40% are not up to the required standard.

If Edublox is able to reach 10% of the 20% with serious reading difficulties, then the potential customer base is 140,000 learners. This excludes learners who join the clinic for development purposes or those with less serious problems.

An Edublox clinic with only 100 registered learners indicates a first-class return on investment, and profit.

Future product and service developments planned for the next three years will focus on expanding to the pre-school market and high school market.

Franchise Business Description

A typical franchise business will do marketing in the allocated territory, sell the services through appointments with parents, assess learners, present classes, sell supporting products and do business administration. As classes are only presented in the afternoons on week days and on Saturday mornings, minimum personnel are required.

The franchise is an owner-operated business, with at least one part-time staff member to assist with administration and leading the computer class. The franchisee will do marketing and assessments in the mornings and present classes in the afternoons.

Quality assurance relating to learner performance is achieved by means of an IP camera in the classroom, and by automated progress reports generated per student in the computer class.

The offices need to be approximately 79 m2 in size to make provision for two classrooms, a reception/administrative area and a small conference room. The group class needs to be furnished with eight small desks and chairs, and a larger desk for the tutor. The computer class has eight computer workstations, linked through a LAN (local area network) to a server computer (with Internet access).

Financial Information

Edublox (Pty) Ltd is making the reading and learning clinics more accessible to South African learners by offering franchise opportunities to entrepreneurs who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. The next training session will be conducted in March 2010.

An initial once-off franchise fee of R150,000 and working capital (including setup costs) of R30,000 to R80,000 is required for start-up. A monthly management fee of 10% of turnover is payable by the franchisee to the franchisor.

The once-off fee covers franchisee training, training equipment, support material, nine computers and installation, and the right to use the Edublox computer programs.

An average monthly sales income of R50,000 is attainable based on three income streams: assessment fees, class fees, and sales of supporting educational products.

Typical monthly expenses include items such as:

  • Management fee (10%)
  • Rent, security, water and electricity
  • Advertising and marketing
  • Printing and stationary
  • Insurance
  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Salaries and wages
  • Telephone, postage and internet
  • Refreshments and entertainment

(Please note that sales income figures are projections.)

If franchisees require finance, Edublox will provide Franchise Finance with relevant information to facilitate the loan application process. Franchise Finance is a specialist franchisee loan origination agency set up to address the exact needs of the franchising industry. Contact Franchise Finance on (012) 661-8678 or visit www.franchisefinance.co.za.

Edublox also plans to register at FASA (Franchise Association of South Africa) in 2010.

Training and Support

Initial franchisee training (12-15 days) covers the following topics:

  • Theories on learning and learning disabilities
  • Learner assessment
  • Presenting the group and computer classes
  • Marketing and sales
  • Business processes and systems

After the training, distance coaching for three months is provided by means of remote computer assistance, VOIP and IP video camera technology. Thereafter, support and advice from head office is available, usually on request from the franchisee. Or, based on monthly key performance indicators as jointly measured by the franchisee and Edublox, assistance and advice may be provided to the franchisee to improve business operations.

Provision of articles and intranet discussions (also between franchisees) create learning on a continual basis.

An annual learning and networking event, usually during the June/July school holidays, provides further training opportunities.

What You Can Expect as a Franchisee

We are dedicated to make your business both personally and financially rewarding in the long term.

To provide long-term sustainability, the allocated territories are large (where possible between 6,000 and 10,000 learners) to create the opportunity for the establishment of a second reading and learning clinic as part of your business. Moreover, the timeframe of the franchise agreement is for a period of 10 years, and is renewable.

As a franchisee, you will receive:

  • The right to use the Edublox name and reputation.
  • A comprehensive initial training program with follow-up coaching.
  • The right to use our comprehensive reading and learning assessment tool.
  • The right to use the Edublox group class curriculum and software programs, all based on sound theories and tried and tested practices.
  • A listing of your franchise on our corporate website.
  • Fit-for-purpose and ready-to-use computerised business systems and marketing tools.
  • Membership of a group of dedicated educational practitioners to learn from and share ideas with.

What We Look for in a Franchisee:

In choosing franchisees, preference will be given to applicants who:

  • Have experience in teaching (mainly primary school children).
  • Love and communicate well with children.
  • Are disciplined self-starters with a high level of personal integrity.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Possess good organisational skills and scheduling ability.
  • Are familiar with and involved in the community where the business is located.
  • Will actively work in and manage the business.
  • Are willing to work with computer programs and information management systems.
  • Take pride in the quality of their work.

The Application Process

We apply a mutual investigation process which allows both parties to exchange information in a sequential manner.

During this process you will be required to provide adequate information for us to evaluate your potential as an Edublox franchisee. At the same time, you will receive sufficient information from us about the franchise opportunity that will allow you to decide whether you wish to move forward at each stage of the application process.

Step 1: The Initial Inquiry

The first step is to thoroughly read the information above and peruse the rest of the Edublox website. If you are still interested in pursuing an Edublox franchise, you should complete and submit the online application form. Please review the information required before completing the online application form.

We will contact you within five working days to confirm if the application meets the minimum requirements. Edublox is not required to provide a reason if an application is not accepted.

Step 2: Informal Discussion

Both parties share information in an informal manner via telephone, email, et cetera. If both parties wish to continue, a formal meeting is arranged at our offices in Pretoria to ensure adequate time for a face-to-face interview and discussion.

Before the meeting, Edublox requires the potential franchisee to sign a non-disclosure agreement, and give permission to Edublox to do reference and background checks, e.g. credit record.

Step 3: Meeting

The first part of the meeting is an interview with the applicant. If Edublox decides after the interview to continue the application process, feedback to the potential franchisee may be provided. This feedback aims to mitigate any risks due to discrepancies found between the interview results of the applicant and the required profile of the successful franchisee.

Secondly, we will explain topics such as:

  • Key success factors.
  • Business processes and (computer) systems.
  • Financial information and projections.
  • Disclosure document, franchise agreement, operations and procedure manuals, training manuals.
  • Marketing and sales strategies and tools.
  • Exposure to products and services (may include attending Edublox classes and visits to or discussions with other franchisees).
  • Quality control approach and mechanisms.
  • Territory boundaries and training schedules.

At the end of the meeting both Edublox and the potential franchisee should have enough information to decide whether they want to continue the process. The next step is for the potential franchisee to complete the franchisee agreement as purchase offer for the right to operate an Edublox franchise.

Step 4: Franchise Agreement, Training and Start-up

On signing franchise agreement, a first payment of 25% of the once-off franchise fee is required to secure the territory and booking for the training course. The final 75% payment is payable before training commences.

Once the agreement is signed, the franchisee sets up the franchise office, and with support (and approval) from Edublox starts with initial marketing actions.

Lastly, the franchisee attends the training and starts to do business!

(Edublox (Pty) Ltd reserves the right in our sole discretion to change and amend the sequence of events without notice.)
